Frequently Asked Questions About Elevator Inspections

QUESTION: What should I do if I lost or did not receive my new operating certificate?

ANSWER: Call our office at 803-896-7630 and we will issue a new operating certificate or tell you why one was never issued. Please try to have your state ID# when you call.

QUESTION: What should I do if I cannot find my abatement form?

ANSWER: Either call our office so we can fax you a form, or download it from this site.

QUESTION: Can I put up a sign stating that my certificates are kept in the office?

ANSWER: State law requires the certificates to be posted in the elevator car. The reason for this is that anyone desiring to file a complaint with our office can easily access our phone number along with the state ID number listed on the operating certificate. If you wish, you may post a copy of the operating certificate in the elevator car and keep the original in your office.

QUESTION: Do elevators in South Carolina need to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A)?

ANSWER: At the present time, the S. C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Office of Elevators and Amusement Rides does not inspect for A.D.A. compliance since it is a federal law. However, all owners of elevators are expected to comply with requirements of the A.D.A to avoid liability.

QUESTION: Where can I get a copy of the elevator code?

ANSWER: Copies of the ANSI A17 codes are available for purchase through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at 800-THE-ASME. Download the South Carolina Elevator Law and Regulations.
